A school kitchen in Ghana makes it to the number one spot
“That the readiness of RWE employees to help others literally knows no bounds is borne out by the project chosen to be Project of the Year 2009. The idea was to build a kitchen and sink a well for a primary school in Ntotroso, Ghana, which has some 300 pupils. Providing the children with a midday meal had long been a problem. Having long been actively involved in the organisation Hilfe für Ntotroso e. V., project leader Birgit Cawni therefore decided to apply for funding from RWE Companius and like the organisation’s chairman Siegfried Kaufmann was delighted with the positive response she got. The funding provided was sufficient to finance not just the installation of a basic, but very practical school kitchen, but also the sinking of a well, which will save the children having to walk for miles merely in order to fetch water.
The project so impressed RWE employees that a majority of them voted it into first place. Ms Cawni has now been awarded an additional € 3,000 to help with a follow-on project. "We hadn’t expected to come first at all and are really thrilled!" said a delighted Ms Cawni on hearing the news. "There are so many things that can be done with a sum as large as this. We haven’t yet made a decision, but are wondering about setting up a midwifery clinic or supporting the work of a local orphanage – since the number of orphans is unfortunately growing all the time."
