New friends found through RWE Companius
Katrin Splawski of RWE AG is not in any doubt at all: "We’re definitely going to continue doing things together even after the project is over. We want to build on the friendship that has developed over the past six months." Splawski was one of ten employees from all over the RWE Group to take part in the RWE Companius project "Friends for Children." Each of them undertook to take under their wing a little girl or boy growing up in difficult circumstances, often without the benefit of any outside stimulation or opportunities to experience new things or take part in organised recreational activities. RWE Companius therefore teamed up with the Ehrenamt Agentur in Essen and began looking for "Friends for Children" willing to devote a few hours of their time to doing something active and positive with such a child and generally having a good time together.
The activities included a visit to the Phenomania section of the Zeche Zollverein mining complex in Essen as well as a joint theatre project. The participants also organised outings and activities of their own. "For me personally it was important to find out what my little girl liked doing best, what she was interested in and what she found difficult," says Splawski, adding that "this also helped break the ice and enabled us to get to know each other better."
In addition to the many happy and carefree hours spent together with the children, the mentors found the experience to be personally enriching as well. "Children are free of prejudices and capable of going into raptures over the tiniest things," says Jasmin Schneider of RWE Innogy GmbH, summarising her own personal impressions. "The children were very open and warm and some greeted us with hugs and pictures they’d painted for us even at the second meeting." This, and many other experiences like it, led to the development of lasting friendships which have already outlived the project.
